This is an open letter found on facebook and instagram written by Connor Wessels to the Boss himself, after his most recent show at MetLife Stadium, NJ, August 25th, his record setting show of 3 hours and 59 minutes. We couldn’t agree more.
I’ve given a lot of thought to what I wanted to say about your show last night. For me personally, the sense of catharsis I experienced throughout the entire concert was nothing short of magical. But then, that’s to be expected when the E Street Band goes out on stage!
This has been one of the best and worst weeks of my entire life, and I just wanted to try put into words how grateful I am for the gift you share so willingly and freely with the world. You’ve been my hero and idol ever since I can remember. I used to fall asleep to your Greatest Hits record when I was 10, never could stay awake past Badlands!
About five years ago I got the chance to meet you and shake your hand. Langhorn Slim was playing the Wonder Bar and there was a buzz in the crowd–everyone felt it. And the buzz was because you were there. You mingled in the crowd, laughing and joking with your people. I wandered over between two songs when you had found yourself alone, and stuck my hand out to shake yours and just said “Hey it’s really great to meet you,” and you responded in a way that struck me just as hard then as it does today: “It’s really nice to see you too!” Like we already knew each other. Like we were buds. Like we had done it a hundred times before. I’ll never forget that moment as long as I live, Bruce. And I’ll never forget last night for as long as I live either. It wasn’t the first E Street Band show I’ve ever seen, but it was the most divine.
Your music and your outlook on life has gotten me through countless dark times, and will continue to do so. I am far from the only one you’ve helped and inspired. I feel indescribably lucky to be alive with you, to share some of the same experiences as you, and to share in your music. You’re a man of your people, and that’s why we love you. That’s why we get down on one knee and propose during your concerts, it’s why we want to come up on stage and sign along with you at the brave age of three, it’s why we always want a longer encore. Your people know how genuine you are, and we love you for it.
Thank you Bruce.
